Ingredients

  • Ingredients for the cake:
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/3 cup of milk
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • Ingredients for the milk syrup:
  • 1 cup of heavy cream
  • 12 oz can of evaporated milk
  • 12 oz can of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Steps for making the cake:
1- Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Place the egg yolks in the larger bowl.
2- Beat in the egg whites into soft peaks using an electrical beater. After 20 seconds, add 1/3 of the sugar to the egg whites and continue beating to firm peaks.
3- Beat the egg yolks with the rest of the sugar until you get a whitish and smooth mixture.
4- Sift the flour and add it to the egg yolk mixture. Add the milk, baking powder, and vanilla extract. Mix well.
5- Fold the egg whites mixture into the egg yolks mixture until you get a smooth batter.
6- Generously batter a 13x9 in. baking pan and add the batter.
7- Preheat the oven to 350 F and bake the cake for 30-40 minutes or until done (when inserting a toothpick, it should come out clean).

  2. Steps for making the milk syrup:
1- Whisk together the heavy cream, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, and vanilla extract.

  3. Last Steps:
1- Let the cake completely cool down. Once it is at room temperature, gently poke it all over with a fork.
2- Pour the milk syrup over the cake. Let the cake soak in the fridge for few hours before serving.

  4. Serving:
You can serve the Tres Leches cake topped with whipped cream or dry coconut flakes and ice cream or fruit on the side. Enjoy!

I haven't made this recipe yet, I made a different one with half and half instead of the heavy wiped cream, it came out good but this recipe looks yummy. I'm gonna make it for my nephew this weekend for his birthday. I'll let u know how it came out. Wish me luck. *^-^*

Sugar what kind of sugar? Caster sugar or fine sugar? How about the flour? Plain flour or self raising flour? This cake not using any butter or oil?

    Hi Alia,

I have a question. I made my cake exactly the way you instructed. When, I took the cake out of the oven the cake was so soft and it rose really well. So I out the cake to cool it down. However, in 5 minutes the cake squeezed and became small and hard. Would you mind to tell my why this happened? I was so happy that the cake rose well.

    Thank you

    @Anut
Not really sure what the problem is. It could be that the egg white were not fluffy enough or that the cake was over-cooked (usually, you have to adjust the temperature to your oven). What happened when you added the syrup? it should have become moist. Another thing that I may think of is that used baking soda instead of baking powder (another viewer did this mistake). hope this help.

Hey Alia - I had this INCREDIBLE desert at Fogo de Chow, but it seemed to be frozen on the top. Do you know how they did this? Can I put the finished cake into the freezer? I wanted to ask before I made it.

    thanks

Hi Alia, I made the cake it came out really good my family loved it, but now they want me to make one for a birthday and I don't know what kind of icing would be the best choice....could you tell me how to make a good icing that goes with this delicious cake?? THANK YOU!!!

Hi Paloma, I would not put an icing. the cake is already sweet and the icing would kill it. However, I would top it with whipped cream and fruits. Look at this recipe for example: http://www.dianasdesserts.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/recipes.recipeListing/filter/dianas/recipeID/1351/Recipe.cfm
      hope this helps!

hi alia i have to try this one, it looks deicious.I have question, i am just curious about the recipe not having any oil or butter. is there a reason why? would really like to know this because to me almost any cake should have some amount of fat in it. thank you for you response in advance.

This is a 'genoise' type of cake, more like 'Angel cake' these types of cake do not have 'fat ' in them, hence, no butter and no oil. The fluffiness comes from the egg whites.

The eggs are essential for this cake, thats what gives it 'fluff'. You may want to look in the internet for recipes "eggless cake" and just add the 3-milks syrup to that.
